However, while Price moved up the placings he is 15 minutes behind leader Spanish Honda rider Joan Baredda who had an outstanding day setting a blistering pace to move from ninth to first in the final stage through Peru.
Price had started in 15th spot after a tough round four, 13 minutes, 23 seconds behind then leader French Yamaha rider Adrien Van Beveren.
Van Beveren had a disappointing day dropping to fifth just 25 seconds ahead of Price.
Price, the 2016 Dakar winner, said he was encouraged by his performance in stage five, with time lost at a waypoint impacting on his overall time.
“I rode next to (KTM Red Bull teammate) Antoine Reo the whole day side by side which was cool to see,” Price tweeted.
“Day five done, I'm feeling good in sixth overall and looking forward to the rest of the week.”
