As with every public holiday, police will be out in force, issuing double demerits to anyone who does not stick to traffic guidelines.
The Australia Day double demerit operation will begin midnight, and be in force from Thursday, January 25, to Sunday, January 28, inclusive.
Double demerit points apply for speeding, seatbelt, motorcycle helmet and mobile phone offences, during all holiday periods including long weekends, Christmas, New Year and Easter.
“We say it time and time again, don’t drink or take drugs and drive,” Operation Australia commander Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb said.
“Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command will be on our roads and you will be caught and put before the courts.”
Aside from road safety, police are also reminding people to look after each other, and themselves, while celebrating.
The next NSW Police double demerits operation will be for Easter in March and April.
