And, it was the girls who will forge the new era of the women’s professional sport who showed the game is in confident and talented hands.
Maitland’s under-15 and under-17 girls rugby seven teams were in action against teams from Easts, Southern Wanderers and Merewether Carlton.
It was the biggest Friday night crowd at Marcellin Park since hundreds of fans watched Maitland’s home-grown Australian XVs representative Mollie Gray appear with the Maitland Blacks women’s team last year on a freezing night in Lorn.
Gray has been an inspiration to many of the girls who played on Friday night and the Maitland Junior Rugby Club, Maitland Rugby Club and the Hunter Junior Rugby Union are delivering competitions and opportunities for the girls to follow Gray’s success.
The dreams of the Little Blacks Army’s next generation of girls and boys to follow in the footsteps of Maitland’s Australian representatives Gray, Luke Burgess and Nic White are alive and well.
