The Bears won their three opening Pool A game in the series and meet Dudley-Redhead in their last pool game before the final against the winner of Pool B at Jack McLaughlan Oval at 4.15pm on Sunday.
Their likely opponents are fellow NPL team Adamstown Rosebud who need just a draw against winless Wallsend FC to advance.
Cessnock City and Maryland Fletcher meet in the other Pool B game and both teams can mathematically make the final with a win if Adamstown lose. However, they would need to make up substantial goal differences.
Weston have progressed to the final with an opening round 2-0 win against Edgeworth, a 2-1 scrappy victory against New Lambton and a dramatic 1-0 win against Lake Macquarie City, in which Lakes missed two penalties.
Bears keeper Kane Runge dived the wrong way in the Lakes’ first attempt from the penalty spot. However, the ball was steered past the net.
Just minutes after, Bears midfielder Chris Hurley made Lakes pay with a stunning strike from 20 metres out to beat the keeper.
Runge was called on again to defend his net and Lakes were denied again from the penalty spot with the teenage keeper diving to his right and holding the ball out.
The Bears’ success has come at a cost with defender Brock Oakley injuring his knee in the Lakes United game and recruit Regan Lundy, signed from the Jets youth team, also sidelined.
