Maitland council identified the 1,151m squared strip of land near Odd Street as it began investigations into the redevelopment of the athletics track at Maitland Sportsground.
Councillors heard at Tuesday’s meeting that the section of land never met the requirements of becoming a public road, slipping between the cracks as it remained in the name of the landowner for more than 100 years after his death.
Historical council records show the land belongs to Sir William Montagu Manning, with an online search revealing that Manning, who died in 1885, was a former University of Sydney Chancellor, judge and politician, as well as spending a period as Solicitor General of New South Wales.
Construction on the sporting hub is slated to begin in the second half of 2018, with Maitland Council to provide $5m for the upgrade and the state government tipping in another $5.5m.
