In a desperate attempt to stop an alleged thief a Rutherford man has leapt on top of a car which proceeded to drive away with him still clinging on.

A 36-year-old man was at a Justine Parade home about 4.30pm Sunday when he allegedly saw someone riffling through his car parked in the driveway.
The man dashed outside but the alleged thief escaped into the passenger side of a Suburu parked on the street.
The resident jumped on top of the car before it could get away, but the driver allegedly took off along Denton Park Drive with the man still holding on.
As the car went around the roundabout the man flew off the roof near the Racecourse Road exit and the car continued along the highway.
Police and ambulance were called. The 36-year-old man suffered cuts to his feet and tar burns to his legs, arms and hands. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
Investigations led police to a service station in Stanford Merthyr and a fast food restaurant in Kurri Kurri, where it is alleged a Visa card stolen from the victim’s vehicle was used.
Police arrested a 32-year-old Metford man on Monday afternoon and took him to Maitland Police Station. He was charged with nine offences including larceny, dishonestly obtaining property by deception and goods in custody believed to be stolen.
Police are making further inquiries in regards to alleged driving offences.
The 32-year-old man was granted conditional bail to appear in Maitland Local Court on April 4.
Police are appealing for information about a second man believed to have been involved in the incident. Information should be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
