The Mercury took an exclusive look at the high-end department store alongside Ms Cornish, who will cut the David Jones ribbon at 9am Thursday.
David Jones is the jewel in the crown of the Stockland Green Hills redevelopment, which will see another 50 shops open for business alongside the high-end department store.
The single-storey, 6000 square-metre space will stock brands such as Seed, SABA, MINKPINK, Country Road and Witchery and will also mark the return of the David Jones cafe to the Hunter.
Ms Cornish, who grew up with her fellow actress sister Abbie in Lochinvar, said the new store would be a great thing for Hunter residents.
“When I was a kid one of my favourite things to do on the weekend was go shopping,” she said.
“People don’t have to go as far as Sydney or Newcastle now to have a great shopping experience.”
David Jones general manager stores operations Jacq Vuleta said Maitland was an up and coming area, so the growing population combined with tourism to the area made it an appealing location to set up shop.
Ms Vuleta said the opening had been a “long time coming” with about 12 months work put into the project.
The staff has employed 88 local staff as well as experienced management for the Maitland store, which is the 44th David Jones across Australia and New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Guzman y Gomez will be celebrating its opening at Green Hills be offering free burritos from noon until 8pm.
More than 800 people have registered their attendance to the free burrito day on Facebook.
