Police said a man entered the Nauti & Nice adult shop on Racecourse Rd about 9.20pm where he produced what was believed to be a pistol and demanded cash.
He is also alleged to have demanded an amount of synthetic cannabis.
The man fled with quantity of cash and synthetic drugs while the female employee contacted police.
Central Hunter detectives say the suspect is described as being in his mid 20s and 180cm tall.
He was wearing black pants a khaki military-style jacket and his face was covered. He also was believed to be wearing gloves.
Officers have asked anyone who had seen a person acting suspiciously outside the business or matching the description leaving the area at that time to contact detectives immediately.
