The East Maitland Griffins have a week to rebound from a 56-14 loss to Belmont Souths in what was a mixed weekend for Maitland teams in the Newcastle Hunter Rugby League semi-finals.
The Griffins had recorded a 30-10 win over Belmont Souths the previous weekend, but were outclassed in the 42-point qualifying final loss on Saturday at Lakeside Oval, Raymond Terrace.
Centre Dan Palmer and back-rowers Larry Taufua and Justin Ridley scored tries for East Maitland, while Shaun Skuthorpe kicked one conversion.
After finishing second in the regular season the Griffins get another chance when they face West Wallsend in the minor semi-final on Saturday.
Paterson River’s season came to an end when they were downed 38-26 by Tea Gardens in the B-grade elimination final.
Tries to Andrew Roberts, Clinton Quarterly, Matthew Roberts, Dean Jones and Jason Smith were not enough for Paterson in the 12-point defeat. In C-grade Dungog were edged out 26-24 by Stroud in the qualifying final.
Fullback Lee Nevin led the way for Dungog with 12 points while Hamish Evans, Fletcher Celand and Kieran Hinton also crossed for four-pointers.
Dungog will now meet Newcastle University in Saturday’s minor semi-final at Lakeside Oval after they defeated Hinton 29-22 in the elimination semi-final.
Winger Mitchell Carter, five-eighth Clint Field and forwards Hayden Dimock and Lewis Price were the try scorers for Hinton.
Thornton Beresfield are one game away from the grand final after a hard-fought 28-22 win over Gloucester in the qualifying final.
Second-rower David Dyson crossed twice for Thornton Beresfield with two tries, Brad Reynolds starred with a try and four goals while Corey Randall and Shannon Weeks also scored tries.
Thornton Beresfield meet minor premiers Carrington in the major semi-final at Lakeside Oval on Saturday.
