New Zealand speedway sidecar passenger Phillipa Burns is in a critical but stable condition at John Hunter Hosptial after being seriously injured in a crash at the Australian titles at Kurri Kurri on Saturday.
Competing in a heat of the qualifying series earlier in the afternoon Burns tumbled from the passenger chair of her sidecar directly into the path of two following sidecars.
Burns was trapped under one of the following sidecars for several metres sustaining serious injuries.
The rescue helicopter was required to transport Burns to John Hunter Hospital for emergency treatment.
Burns is passenger for her husband Andrew Buchanan and the pair was competing in the national title as the last meeting of their Australian competition schedule for 2014.
A John Hunter Hospital spokeswoman said Burns, 45, was in a critical but stable condition, but could not elaborate on the injuries sustained.
