West Maitland were downed 40-22 by Cardiff at Cardiff on Saturday, while East Maitland, in their first match after being promoted, were beaten 34-6 by Wallsend Maryland at Grange Oval on the same day.
The century-old local club rivalry will be reignited at King Edward Park on Sunday when the Griffins host the Red Dogs in round six action.
In C-grade the Dungog Warriors edged past Waratah Mayfield 13-12 at Bennett Park on Friday night while Raymond Terrace comfortably accounted for Paterson River 44-10 at Lakeside Sporting Complex on Saturday while Thornton Beresfield struggled against Lambton (35-22) at Ford Oval.
And in D-grade it was Abermain getting the better of their local derby with Woodberry (34-22) at Howe Park on Saturday, Hinton went close but were unable to get past Williamtown (32-30) at Hexham while Clarence Town were defeated 34-22 by Karuah at home.
