The Clarence Town Cobras have set up another do-or-die semi-final clash in the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League D-grade competition after claiming an eight-point victory at Lakeside Sporting Complex on Saturday.
The Cobras will now face the Hinton Hornets in this weekend’s minor semi-final at the Raymond Terrace venue after accounting for the Gloucester Raiders 28-20.
The Cobras scored five tries-to-four in the elimination semi-final with centre Brad Johnston, five-eighth Ben Trappel, halfback Cale Middleton, hooker Phil Batier and second-rower Scott Batey all crossing the line.
Batier slotted home four conversions.
This result ended the Raiders’ season while Hinton remains alive despite going down to Karuah at Lakeside on Saturday.
Hinton were defeated 54-12 by Karuah in the qualifying semi-final with five-eighth Mitch Hunter and back-rower Kaine McDonald scoring tries for the Hornets while centre Will Frost kicked both goals.
The Hornets will want to bounce back against the Cobras at Raymond Terrace this Saturday (11.40am) while Karuah meets minor premiers Williamtown in the major semi-final (10am).
In the C-grade competition the Raymond Terrace Magpies got the better of the Thornton Beresfield Bears 30-8 in their qualifying semi-final.
Magpies second-rower Adam Jenkinson nabbed a double while his back-row partner Barry Kennewell was successful with all five conversion attempts.
Magpies fullback Billy Greentree, centre Mitchell Turvey and hooker Ross Urquhart were the other try scorers on their home ground on Saturday.
For the Bears centre Mulimuli Fakaosi and halfback Josh Hutchinson scored four pointers.
The Bears now face Lambton in the C-grade minor semi-final at Lakeside Sporting Complex on Saturday (11.40am) while Raymond Terrace have minor premiers Waratah Mayfield in the major semi-final (10am).
In the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League higher grades Belmont Souths and Windale do battle in the A-grade major semi-final (1.20pm) while Dudley and Cardiff tackle each other in the minor semi-final (3pm) and in B-grade it is Newcastle University, Tea Gardens (1.20pm), Mallabula and the Cessnock Cutters (3pm) left vying for the title.
Preliminary finals for all grades will be played at Raymond Terrace on September 6 with the decider scheduled for Kurri Kurri Sportsground on September 13.
