Both teams fell one win short of making the decider after going down in preliminary final encounters at Newcastle No.2 Sportsground.
Seconds were outclassed by minor premiers Wanderers 40-15, while thirds were defeated 15-7 by University.
Maitland inside centre Jordy Lantry put himself on the score sheet in seconds of the game starting, while breakaway Angus Taylor crossed for the Blacks’ sole try in thirds.
In the other grades Wanderers beat Merewether Carlton in firsts while The Greens triumphed over Hamilton in colts.
These results mean Wanderers will be represented in grand finals across all four grades this Saturday, Southern Beaches will appear in the top two while Merewether and University round out the clubs in action.
In Saturday’s NHRU grand finals Singleton won both A and B grades while Wanderers took out C-grade.
