The team challenge was held on the weekend and competitors had to struggle through torrential rain to reach the finish line.

The locals, from Crossfit Maitland, ­finished the event in 21 hours 41 minutes – three hours behind the winning group from the Sutherland Shire.

Craig Strudwick, Paula Hartigan and Nathan Lane, were the first mixed gender team to make it to the finish line and were ­second overall.

WildEndurance is an annual event that raises money for the The Wilderness Society and this year more than $150,000 was ­collected.

The Maitland team raised almost $2000, which the society will use to track and save koalas in the Blue Mountains.

More than 340 people competed in the event and bad weather meant participants had to endure swamp-like conditions.

The Maitland group had to wade through waist-deep water in parts to cross creeks swollen from the heavy rain and spent most of the 21 hours walking through mud.

“It was a phenomenal performance by the team under the conditions,” event manager Sarah Williams said.

“It was easily the worst conditions we’ve ever faced and it was a massive effort for the teams to complete the event.” 

The team from Feel Good Fitness with Colette competed in the 50 kilometre event and finished in 18th place.

The all-female team of Charlene Cole, Natasha Cole, Leonie Murray-Lantry, Julie Sweetman and Colette Gutsch-Berry was the sixth all-women group to cross the finish line and raised more than $3200.
