The wheels are in motion for The Mai-Wel Group’s 2017 theatre production, Destiny: The Musical.
Auditions will be held in Maitland and Cessnock next month.
The inclusive community production will be led by a group of artists who have a disability, but auditions are open to everyone.
Mai-Wel received a grant from Accessible Arts NSW’s Delineate program to fund the project, which will provide leadership opportunities and mentoring for artists with disability.
A creative committee has been established, comprising Mai-Wel participants Andrew Ernst (who has taken on the roles of director and MC), Sal Thompson (music), Angela Kowalski (dance) and Pertriece Brown (digital design and event management).
This group of artists will be mentored in aspects of stage direction, set and costume design, lighting, sound and production, through tutored workshops from community or professional artists in their field.
“We’re all excited at the opportunity to put on something original and lead a project, and work with so many people along the way,” Mai-Wel’s creative arts coordinator Steve Burchill said.

Destiny: The Musical is an original musical, written and composed by SB2 Productions.
It is based on a variety of genres from ragtime and Motown to rock and ballads.
The cast will feature five principal actors and an ensemble of actors, singers and dancers.
It tells the story of Destiny, a small-town girl goes to the big city to follow her dreams.
And like Destiny herself, the creative committee also has big dreams for this show.
“We want to put it out there to the globe,” Mr Ernst said.
The production will take place at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on December 6.
Tickets will be on sale at the performing arts centre in early March, and considering the success of Mai-Wel’s last production – Grease, in 2014 – tickets are expected to sell quickly.
Auditions for Destiny: The Musical will be held at Maitland’s Sun Street Studios on March 11 and Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on March 18.
Both sessions will run from 10am to 2pm, with dance, music and theatre workshops on the day.
