Councillors were almost tripping over themselves to nominate for the 2017 National General Assembly of Local Government on June 18 to 21.
There was much mirth in the chamber as councillors and the mayor bandied about a trip to the nation's capital.
The event is an opportunity for councils to identify and discuss national issues of priority for the sector and agree on possible steps to address these issues.
A report said local government played a significant role in the national economy and councils played critical roles in their local economies.
Councillors Penfold, Wethered, Aitchison, Whiting, and Meskauskas will attend. Mayor Peter Blackmore declined nomination. “It’s too cold there that time of year,” he said.
The trip will be funded from councillors’ professional development accounts.
