The Hunter’s first World Gym opened at 6 Johnson Street on Friday.
The Maitland club is just the 18th World Gym to open in Australia. And while the brand is fairly new to this country, it has quite the following around the world.
Joe Gold founded the gym the USA in 1976 and since then it has expanded to 17 different countries.
World Gym Australia director Mike Nysten said he had been looking to bring the franchise to the Hunter since he moved to Newcastle about six years ago.
He said Maitland turned out to be a suitable spot as it had the right demographic and a good fitness following.
But Mr Nysten said they had designed the 24-hour gym for more than just the bodybuilding crowd.
“We cater pretty heavily to females and mums and bubs,” he said.
“We want to provide a facility everyone is comfortable in.”
