Emergency services were called to the scene and the street was shut to traffic.
An excavator reportedly hit the gas line on a work site near the corner of Turton Street and Fieldsend Street. Ten people were evacuated and a 100 metres protective zone was setup around the leak.
The gas company was at the scene, but work was expected to take some time as repairs required further excavations.
Residents were asked to avoid the area and nearby houses were warned power could be cut as overhead lines near the site posed a hazard during repair work.
