A ceremony was held to celebrate the new facility on Friday morning before the 25-metre pool opens to the public at 1pm.
The youngest Australian Paralympian gold medalist said she had been waiting a long time for the new pool. She was overjoyed to be the first to get their feet wet.
“To be able to swim the first lap of the new pool is absolutely insane and crazy at the same time,” she said.
Maitland City Council general manager David Evans said the $9.7 million pool project had been about 10 years in the making.
He said the new indoor facility was “absolutely fabulous”.
“People have been looking for this for years and years and years,” he said. “Now its here, it’s great.”
“80,000 people need an indoor pool.
“I think it’s great, I hope they think it’s great too.”
