The paralympic swimming star finished the night with a graduation certificate and a school blue for outstanding services to her school.

And what made it even more memorable was that her close friend and fellow paralympian Kurt Fearnley presented the awards.

“They’re friends and she wasn’t too impressed with me for keeping it a secret that he would be there,” Maddi’s mother Nikki said.

A formal story wouldn’t be complete without talk of a dress. “It’s recycled from a presentation night a few years ago,” Nikki explained.

Did she win that night too? “She did as a matter of fact.”
