In fact recent wet conditions over the past two weeks have been the icing on the cake in the lead up to vintage 2018.
Independent viticultural consultant Liz Riley said Monday’s storm had little effect on the Hunter’s vine stock.
“We fared reasonably well suffering some minor damage which was pretty limited,” she said. “All in all we’re pretty relieved. The rain we’ve had over the past two and a half weeks, which we desperately needed, probably nudged about 100ml which came when we were significantly behind for the growing season. We really can’t complain and we’re now concentrating on throwing a bit more management behind the few sites that did suffer some hail damage,” she said.
Keith Tulloch of Keith Tulloch Wines said there was no apparent damage to his vines. “Everything looks fresh and bright with no loss or damage,” he said. “The storm cell was quite narrow.”
