Norths are 156 runs ahead after a dismissing Easts for 81 and a commanding day with the bat finishing on 5/237 at East Maitland Park last Saturday.
Norths skipper Michael Wilson said securing victory was the first priority but it had been a fantastic effort by the bowlers and batsmen to put the side in a position to potentially challenge for an outright.
“We’ll decide how we approach the game on the day,” Wilson said. “To be in this position is very pleasing, the boys did a terrific job.
“I was probably shocked when Easts decided to bat first as there was a fair green tinge on the wicket, but the bowlers had to deliver and to restrict a pretty quality batting order to just 81 was a fantastic effort.
“Our openers Lincoln (Mills) and Will (Fort) came out with a real focus. Lincoln gave us a great start with his innings (68 off 32 balls) and Will was able to play his shots.
“It was his first century in first grade and showed his class.”
Wilson said it had taken a while for Norths to settle at the start of the season but they had really gelled over the past three games.
“We have brought five teenagers into the team and it was going to take a while for the team to settle,” he said.
“The youngsters are really feeling like they belong at this level and are learning so much from the established players.
“It goes both ways as the more experienced players are really picking up on the enthusiasm the young blokes bring.”
Raymond Terrace are also on top going into day two but will need to maintain their pressure in the field against Kurri Weston.
Kurri Weston led by five wickets to Alex Seamer dismissed the Lions for 177.
However, an inspired session of bowling by Aaron Bills left the Warriors at 5/49 and in all sorts of trouble.
Bills finished with 5/3 from his 10 overs, which included nine maidens.
City United and Western Suburbs are evenly poised and the first hour of play will be crucial to the outcome.
The Plovers bowlers dismissed the strong City batting line-up for 150, with Matt Shone taking four wickets.
However, City struck back to have Wests at 6/132 with Tim Burton grabbing 3-12.
