Workers clean up Maitland riverside following New Year's Eve celebrations

WHILE most of Maitland was still sleeping, there were a few people up early on New Year’s Day.

There was little movement at The Levee when, at about 5.30am, a street sweeper was already on the scene to clean up from the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The sweeper was shortly followed by workers at 6am, who began removing rubbish from along the riverside.

Griffin Group of Companies was contracted by Maitland City Council to do the work – an effort which supervisor Jason Hines believed would take all day.

By 8am, the team had filled six wheelie bins, with much more left to pick up.

“We were assuming at the start it would be a half day, but it looks like it will be a full day,” Mr Hines said.

“It’s mainly cardboard – the kids were using it for the slides.”

Despite being a big undertaking, workers thought the amount of waste left on the ground after the party was not as bad as it could have been.
