Dent and Nick Bower (41) combined for a 74-run partnership taking City from 5/88 to 6/162.
He was finally dismissed with the score on 179 leaving City eight wickets down, but 45 from Vivers and 17 by Bowen Schmidt ensured City’s bowlers have a healthy target to defend.
Kurri Weston skipper Tim Harding led the way with the ball taking 4-64 from 23 overs.
Harding had the City batsmen ducking and weaving a fiery opening spell.
He received good support from Josh Tuckwell (2-30), Sam Dalibozek (2-18) and Alex Seamer (2-30).
Plovers on top
Western Suburbs are firmly on top in their clash against Eastern Suburbs dismissing the Griffins for 210 and finishing at stumps on day one at 2/101.
They could have been in an even stronger position with joint-skipper Tom Irwin dismissed for 49 in the last over of play, with Aaron Mahony not out of 51.
Irwin’s co-skipper Mitchell Fisher said a lightning outfield and a flat track at Coronation Oval had enabled batsman to get full value for their shots.
Fishers said it was hard work in the field with the strong wind and little in the pitch for bowlers.
“We had to work extremely hard for every wicket, but the boys stuck to it and got the job done in tough conditions,” he said.
Luke Kealy led the attack with three wickets and Justin Lantry picked up 2-0 from three balls to finish off the innings.
“Justin rarely gets a bowl but for some reason we chucked him the ball and it paid off with the final two wickets in the one over,” Fisher said.
“The rest of the wickets were shared around.”
Trent Park led the way for Easts, coming in at 4-59 and making 75 before being dismissed for 110.
Josh Hicks gave him great support scoring 47.
Lions in trouble
Raymond Terrace will be looking for quick early wickets against Thornton after be dismissed for just 129 on the first day of their round nine encounter at Jack Collins Oval.
The Lions struck back with two wickets through Nick Savage (2-10), to leave Thornton at 2-14 at stumps, however, the visitors are still very much in control.
Elliott Thompson led the Thornton attack with 4-16 from 13 overs. Brent Dawes picked up 2-31 and the remainder of the wickets were shared around as Terrace’s innings lasted just 55 overs.
Savage top scored for the Lions with 33 and Joseph Harden was unbeaten on 26.
