Benhome offers both residential and home care services to the Maitland surrounding communities and is strongly supported by the Maitland Benevolent Society. Established in 1867, Benhome was born to a group of compassionate community members bonded together by a desire to raise money for those in need. As the service prospered, it developed a primary focus on aged care in the 1970’s and still continues to provide the same level of care and kindness it has been known for within the Maitland community.
Today Benhome offers residential and low respite care, along with a range of home care services for those in need of assistance, yet still living at home. Guided by the organisational values of integrity, honesty, respect, communication, teamwork, care and quality, all staff members uphold a vision to provide a standard of care that is second to none and to consistently value the ageing Maitland community.
“I think it’s important to recognise and respect the worth of the people we care for, they all have a story - our job is take the time to listen and learn so that the transition into care is as smooth as possible,” begins Irene Gill, Director of Care Services at Benhome. “After all, we’re all going to grow old. We aim to give the same care that we would hope for ourselves.”
Benhome is currently in stage 2 of building works, and will be operating 124 residential beds by the mid year. Located in Regent Street, the facilities celebrate the old and welcome the new, giving nod to the history of its building, yet embracing modern facilities for the best care. With over 100 employees and registered nurses rostered 24/7, clients can be assured that they are in good hands; whether utilising the Home Care services such as domestic help or social activities, or as a full time resident, respect is thread through every aspect of the organisation.
“We have a saying; it reminds us that we work in the resident’s home, that they don’t live in our work place,”
Unlike stand alone Home care providers, Benhome’s structure gives home care clients access to Residential facility services, enabling social connections with residents and staff. Benhome also offer low care Respite services to those in need.
“While someone may still be living independently, when the time does come for full time care, having those interactions means the transition to Residential Aged Care is less stressful. It’s a difficult process to go through, and we understand how important it is for our clients to feel they belong.”
