McKeachies Oval was a sea of red and white as the West Maitland Wallaroos hosted teams from across the district in the opening round of the Maitland and District Schoolboys Rugby League competition.
Teams from as far afield as Singleton, Dungog, Cessnock and Mallubula will take part in this year’s competition alongside traditional clubs East and West Maitland.
Fairfax Media caught up with action as West Maitland hosted Greta Branxton Colts in under-8s, Cessnock in under-10s, Singleton in under-12s and Mallubula in under-13s on Saturday morning.
Similar stories across the district unfold this weekend as boys and girls, many for the first time, joined in the fun of team sports across the various football codes.
The Maitland netball competition has a delayed start with competition starting on May 5.
