Local riders will be joined by competitors from Queensland and Victoria for the opening round of the 2018 Kurri Kurri Speedway Club Championship incorporating the opening round of the 2018 Winter Series.
Talented Cowra rider Matthew Gilmore will defend his club championship crown. He will face a challenge from four of the five riders who finished right behind him in last year’s championship.
Local riders Josh Macdonald (third), Alan Macdonald (fourth) and Kane Lawrence (sixth) as well as Queensland’s Zaine Kennedy (runner up) have entered for the opening round.
It was anticipated that Gilmore, a two time World Junior Speedway Champion, might head to Europe in 2018 but he will stay in Australia to continue to gain race experience.
Gilmore and his fellow competitors are well aware that the UK and European scouts keep a close eye on Australian speedway during the winter months so winning ways will auger well in pressing claims for an overseas contract.
Victorian stars Cooper Riordan and Declan Knowles as well as Queenslanders Declan Kennedy and Zane Keleher make up a formidable interstate line up for the opening meeting of the autumn/winter schedule.
Local riders Jack Miles, James Pearson and Lachlan Hayes also face a strong interstate challenge in the junior divisions.
Victorians Connor Bailey and James Crundwell will be joined by Queenslanders Jacob Hook and Cordell Rogerson in the 125cc and 250cc divisions.
The junior 125cc racing is scheduled to get underway at 10am with the senior and junior 250cc racing to follow.
Kurri’s Campton breaks wrist
Kurri Kurri rider Mason Campton’s run of bad luck continued with the Workington Comets reserve breaking his wrist while practising.
The Times and Star newspaper reported Campton crashed and injured himself while getting some laps in with his Comets team-mate Ty Proctor at Leicester on Sunday.
An examination and X-ray later revealed that his wrist was broken in four places.
The Australian rider is due to see a consultant in Sheffield later this week to find out more information.
Club owner Laura Morgan said: "I spoke to Mason and he is totally dismayed at what has happened and a little shocked I think.”
