Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said traffic lights which would operate during peak traffic times were one of the options being explored by RMS.
An RMS spokesperson confirmed that solutions to address congestion at the troublesome roundabout were currently being explored.
Any measures developed would be discussed with Maitland City Council and open to the community for consultation at a later stage, the spokesperson said.

Maitland council declined to provide further specifics on the developments, stating that the road was under State government jurisdiction.
Cr Baker said traffic lights would be a welcome addition for frustrated drivers, and would go some way to solving the a daily logjam for westbound travelers in the afternoon.
She said the one-way eastbound bypass had created a “total disaster” of a situation, with the transformation of Maitland Park into an impromptu rat-run “not good for our park”.
Congestion has been an issue at the site since the opening of the flyover in 2016.
A proposed solution to the problem will likely be a hot-button issue for next year’s State government election.
Despite being a State issue, the problem was also regularly mentioned by candidates in last year’s council election, with Councillors past and present lobbying for a quick solution from the NSW Government.
