There was a hum of anticipation across the ground awaiting a classic Coalfields encounter against Cessnock Goannas..
The grandstand was already half-full as the under-19s clash ended in a 46-4 win to the Pickers and a roar went up when the Pickers open age team scored their first try since the grade was readmitted to the Newcastle Rugby League.
Earlier the Cessnock Goannas women defeated Maitland 18-14 on the bell.
Kick off in first grade is at 3.30pm and while there is still plenty of space inside the ground fans coming to the game may want to get dropped off.
There is still parking at the Smyth Field and Horshoe Bend ends of the ground and Club Maitland City will be running courtesy busses back to the club after the game.
