Navigating the process of engaging a home care provider can be complex and confusing, yet it’s possibly one of the most important decisions we have to make in our later years.
Lez Moore, Village and Home Care Manager of UPA Home Care, says while the task of selecting a provider can be huge, allowing a home care provider to guide you can make all the difference.
“The biggest challenge we see is how confusing the system can be for people - it can be very overwhelming. As a provider we can explain how the process works and what to do,” begins Lez.
UPA Home Care is a service of The United Protestant Association of NSW, a non-for-profit organisation that has been providing services to the community for more than 75 years.
UPA Home Care Services are managed by regional offices which means the staff working within those offices are locals, caring for elderly locals in the area, with domestic assistance, personal care, day trips or simply providing company.
The philosophy of Lez and his team is to provide a level of service that puts the needs of the client first and to really listen.
“While we call ourselves carers, we are so much more than that, you have to remember that it’s vital we are trusted, after all we are in their home, not simply at a place of work,” he continues.

Finding the right provider is key and with a growing number to choose from, Lez advises it’s crucial for people to feel like they are being heard.
“When first talking to a home care provider, you don’t want to be sold to, it’s not about them, it’s about you, so ensure they listen to you and understand your concerns or needs.”
As a registered nurse Lez will often manage the clinical needs of clients and is able to detect emerging issues early and refer clients to the right specialist if necessary.
His small team keep the well being of their clients a priority and are passionate about the work that they do.
“As a boutique provider, we are flexible and work closely with clients to deliver a personal and tailored service.
“Our team are qualified, checked and have all the relevant registrations required, but by far the most important thing they have is heart.”
“It’s a difficult role at times, so loving what we do and caring for our clients is pivotal to everything we do.”
