And the Maitland Showgirl is urging the Hunter to step up and do the same.

The city’s Rural Aid Black Tie and Boots Ball will be held on May 19 at Club Maitland City to help Upper Hunter and Lower Hunter farmers who are struggling to keep their animals alive. 

“The drought is such a big issue at the moment for our farmers,” Ms Hipwell said.

“Every cent going towards the bales of hay for all the animals will help, especially for all of our cattle.”

Proceeds from the event will go to the Buy A Bale Hunter campaign, which has already given struggling farmers  more than $520,000 worth of help through hay, water, groceries and transport. 

Tickets are $125 each and include canapes, champagne, wine and soft drinks as well as a three course meal.

Golden Guitar winner Matt Scullion and his band will have toes tapping with a night of entertainment.

The event, which starts at 5.30pm and ends at 11pm, has been organised by Kate Schouten. The event comes as 40 per cent of the Hunter is in drought, 44 per cent is at the onset of drought and 16 per cent could dip into drought or recover. 

In the past two months the amount of Hunter land at the onset of drought has more than doubled. 

Club Maitland City and Maitland Business Chamber have already thrown their support behind the event.
