A scammer has gained $8000 from a Hunter man after claiming they were contacting him for assistance to catch a fraud offender.
The elderly man was contacted on May 10 by someone who said they were from Telstra in Sydney.
The caller told the man they needed his help to catch a fraud and required his bank details to deposit $8000 so he could catch the offender.
The man handed over his details but instead of receiving the money, $8000 was taken from his account the next day and deposited into a Western Union account in Kuala Lumpur.
The man contacted Maitland Police after realising what had happened.
Police said it was the second time the man had been targeted by a scam.
The Australian Competitor and Consumer Commission has received several reports about Telstra scams.
