The 18-year-old man was walking home with a friend, also aged 18, from a Central Maitland hotel about 2.30am when a silver sedan pulled up alongside them at the railway overpass near Telarah Train Station.
The victims told police two men jumped out of the vehicle, one of whom was armed with a baseball bat.
The offenders approached one of the 18-year-old men and demanded he hand over his phone and wallet.
The victim told the men he didn’t have either before he was punched in the face.
Police said the two men then got back into the silver sedan before fleeing the scene empty-handed.
The uninjured 18-year-old ran to a nearby house to get help before police were called.
Police attended and obtained statements from both of the 18-year-old men. Police have not yet been unable to identify the offenders involved.
Anyone who may have information that could assist with the police inquiries is urged to come forward.
Information should be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
