Police stopped a vehicle heading east on the New England Highway near High Street about 10.40pm due to the manner of driving.
The 22-year-old male driver was tested at the scene for drugs and alcohol. He returned a negative breath test but allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine and cannabis in a mouth swipe test.
Police also seized 21 tablets of varying shapes and colours, believed to be prescription drugs, after speaking with the man.
Officers ordered the man to take an oral fluid test, but he allegedly refused and was charged with refusing a drug test and possession of prescription drugs without a prescription.
He was issued a court attendance notice to attend Maitland Local Court.
