In tough, windy conditions Hills prevailed with a 44-39 win in a result which breathes new life into a competition which they had been dominating.
The George Tavern had the weekend off after a forfeit by Maitland Carpet Court and now sit in clear second three points behind Hills and four points clear of MCC.
Club Maitland City are fourth on the table but are now just two points behind MCC and can leapfrog them into third place if results fall their way next weekend.
Royal Federal Hotel returned to winning form with a 34-22 win against Hinton Hotel.
Royal Federal’s strong contingent of under-17 Maitland representatives backed up from the long-weekend’s state championship and showed no ill effects from their busy schedule.
The Branxton team’s win ends a three-game losing streak and leaves them in fifth spot, equal on points with Club Maitland City.
They face Maitland Carpet Court in a crucial round seven encounter. A win would return them to the top four at the halfway mark of the season.
Branxton’s other side MPBC also had a win defeating Maitland Blacks Tolsaf Cranes 34-25.
MPBC are still within striking distance of the top four and finals action but need to back up their win with a strong result against The George Tavern next round.
