The blaze started at a home on Verdelho Avenue Cessnock, with emergency crews called to the scene sometime between 11pm and midnight.
Two Cessnock Fire and Rescue NSW trucks arrived to find a lounge chair alight.
The occupant extinguished the fire.
The house was not engulfed in flames and aside from the lounge, further destruction did not exceed a small amount of smoke damage.
Paramedics attended the scene at approximately 11.15pm and assessed and treated a 17-year-old male for burns to his hands and smoke inhalation.
He was transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment, along with an adult and a toddler.
The cause of the fire is unconfirmed at this stage.
