Councillors agreed at last week’s meeting to explore funding options for the purchase and installation of a mobile sling hoist, a mobile shower trolley/change table, and adjoining modifications to the existing unisex toilets at the centre at a cost of $57,209.
It comes after Cr Nicole Penfold moved a notice of motion at council’s April 10 meeting, during which it was resolved that council compile a report exploring the cost of purchase and installation of the equipment.
Maitland Aquatic Centre already has an access ramp and a hydraulic chair servicing the indoor pool, specifically to provide access for clients with disability.
According to council’s report, the access ramp is currently utilised on a regular basis in conjunction with the pool wheelchairs available for patron use.
While use of the hydraulic chair lift has been ‘minimal’ according to council, consultants and service providers indicated that the current limited use of the hydraulic chair lift could be because of the lack of other accessible facilities and amenities at the centre.
In particular, potential patrons that may wish to use the hydraulic chair lift could be turned off going to the centre at all due to absence of a hoist, change table and compliant accessible amenities.
It was a point that struck a chord with councillors, who voted to progress to the next stage of the project.
