Maitland Greens spokesperson Jan Davis said the Greens’ “symbolic gesture” was to remind people that plastic bags are no longer the norm when visiting the supermarket.
“We just want people to remember to take their string or canvas bags to the shops now. Keep them in the car, hang them on the door to remind yourself that this is the way forward,” Ms Davis said. She said people visiting Rutherford and McKeachies Woolworths were aware of the change and prepared, coming to the supermarkets with their own bags.
A Woolworths spokesperson said Wednesday was a big step in Woolworths’ efforts to help create a greener future for Australia.
“We were pleased with the positive response from customers on day one to us no longer providing single-use plastic shopping bags in our Rutherford and McKeachies Run stores.”
