Unfortunately, the man himself will be missing as Saturday’s Maitland Rams 40th anniversary dinner clashes with his bucks night, but no one doubts his love of the club.
While Orchard is the club’s most famous son, the four selectors for the 40th anniversary team have an onerous task with a rich array of talent to choose from.
Those sure to come up for notice are Orchard’s NSW teammate Peter Urquhart and World Cup masters winner Glen Stolk.
Club president Glen Meehan said the make-up of the team had been kept pretty hush-hush, we’ve had a couple of guys going through a heap of profiles from over the years and a selection committee will decide on the final line-up.
Meehan said the team would be announced by life members of the club on Saturday night.
“We’ve got about 130 people attending including a large number of the original members of the club,” he saidl
“It will be a who’s who of Maitland hockey. Unfortunately, it’s the same weekend as Simon Orchard’s buck show so our Australian rep won’t be there but he has sent us all his best.
“In addition to naming the team we plan to induct a couple more life members which is exciting.”
While the club has produced an array of stars it is still chasing it’s first premier league championship.
“We’re still to win a first grade premiership, in 2010 we were minor premiers but we’re still chasing that elusive first one,” Meehan said.
The Rams premier league team are fifth and are at home with all grades playing at Maitland on Sunday.
“There’s still hope of playing finals, but we need to keep on winning,” Meehan said.
