The new Lawes Street park will feature a skate bowl and street elements, along with three small all weather shelters, seating spaces, a water bubbler and an area that supports spill out spaces for events and competitions.
The bowl will be up to two metres deep and 20 metres by eight metres wide.
Community feedback was used to create the design of the park, which means it will be a unique skating facility in Maitland.
“Local riders of all levels will soon be able to use the new facility,” Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said.
“It’s so wonderful to see construction starting.”
Council’s community and recreation manager Laurie D'Angelo said the contractor was now onsite, had erected fencing and commenced earthworks.
She said the major component of the project will be the construction of the bowl, and once that is complete the remaining infrastructure will be brought in.
“People will see work happening over the next three months,” Ms D’Angelo said.
If all goes well, construction of the East Maitland skate park will be completed in November 2018.
