Entries to the competition were open to all students across the school with 60 students participating.
The winners will be announced during a special assembly and book parade on Friday. Sponsored by David Haggarty First National Real Estate, sales representative Pat Howard will announce the lucky winners at the assembly.
Teacher Kristy Harris said the My Maitland Art Competition stirred some wide and varied ideas and interests.
These included paintings of Luskintyre Bridge, Maitland riverbank, Maitland Park and pool, Kmart, council chambers, local dance studios, West Maitland Wallaroos jersey, nan’s rose garden at Lorn and the Hunter River.
Other works depicted Maitland boxing great Les Darcy, New Year’s Eve fireworks and Maitland PCYC.
Ms Harris said the aim of the exhibition was for students to identify special and significant places and people who are connected to the school’s local community.
Students were given a brief to create an artwork that related to the Maitland area and was meaningful to them.
“It’s also to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their creative flair, to share their interests and connections to their local community,” Ms Harris said.
This is the school’s first art competition and exhibition and it is hoped it will now become a regular on the school’s diary.
The exhibition is open every day during Book Week (this week) and parents can also view the art works at school pick up.
The school has also recently unveiled its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mural.
“It’s quite amazing,” Ms Harris said. “It was completed by local Aboriginal artist John Robinson and our school’s ATSI students.”
