All’s Well That Ends Well
Directed by Joanne McAndrews
“The web of our life is a mingled yarn, good and ill together”
Following his father’s death, Bertram, the young Count of Rousillion, is sent to Paris to be a ward of the ailing King of France.
Helena, the low-born orphaned daughter of a famous but poor physician, dotes on Bertram and when he leaves for Paris, her world falls apart.
Desperately, she follows Bertram to Paris with a plan to heal the ailing King and as her reward, claims Bertram as her husband.
Disgusted at being forced to marry someone below his status, Bertram refuses to consummate the marriage and instead flees to Florence to join the Tuscan wars.
He declares to Helena that she will never call him husband until she can “get the ring upon my finger which never shall come off, and show me a child begotten of thy body that I am father to”.
What lengths will Helena go to to win her love?
Based in France and Italy, All’s Well That Ends Well is a story of a rejected love, based on a tale from Boccaccio’s Decameron.
Labelled as one of Shakespeare’s `problem plays’ for its unique mixture of genres, All’s Well is an intriguing mix of comedy, drama, romance and fantasy.
Don’t miss your chance to see this classic at one of the remaining show times.
Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1, at 8pm.
The show will be at Maitland Repertory Theatre, Corner High and James Streets, Maitland.
