Hunter parliamentary secretary Scot MacDonald announced Multiplex Constructions as the successful contractor on the $470 million project, which will be 70 per cent larger than the current hospital.
“The new Maitland Hospital will be almost twice the size of the existing hospital, delivering on the NSW Government’s commitment to improve regional access to quality health care,” he said.
Multiplex Constructions will work with CBRE Project Managers, Hunter New England Local Health District and Health Infrastructure to build the new hospital.
New Mai health executive leader Eddie Pirillo said the current Maitland Hospital employed 800 staff, but the number is expected to grow with the larger new facility.
“We are very excited with the opportunity, because effectively the hospital will now get going and construction will start very soon,” he said.
“It will continue to provide the same services as the current Maitland Hospital but also enhanced services for the community.
“We have always planned for 339 beds for hospitals, but the site will give us the opportunity for future expansion. This is a significant increase and about 70 per cent growth.
“We see this facility as being a precinct. We see it as a significant site for Hunter New England.”
Work is expected to begin early next year.
