The Maitland Grossmann High School student would always jump to help take care of her grandparents when they weren’t well or injured.
It was this love that propelled her to take on a nursing traineeship at TAFE.
“I think it’s the fact that you’re constantly helping people – even the littlest things make a big difference to their day,” Lucy said.
“One of the best parts is seeing people come in at their worst and being able to see them go home but also caring for someone at the end of their life and making them comfortable.”
For the past two years, Lucy has balanced working one day at Maitland hospital, half a day at TAFE and studying her for Higher School Certificate.
Last week, her tireless hard work was recognised.
The 18-year-old was recognised as School Based Apprentice/Trainee Student of the Year at the prestigious NSW Training Awards at the Sydney’s Town Hall last Wednesday.
“I was pretty shocked but it is really excited. I thought they had read out the wrong name,” Lucy said.
“Receiving a NSW Training Award is massive – my family is so proud. My traineeship has been the most amazing thing and such a good opportunity.
“It really opens your eyes to what being a nurse is actually like.”
Now, Lucy will focus on finishing her final exams and continuing her training to become a nurse.
“I’m looking forward to becoming a Registered Nurse, but while I study for that, I’ll be able to pick up casual work as an Assistant Nurse (AIN), which is fantastic,” she said.
TAFE NSW students, teachers and industry partnerships claimed nine of the 14 awards on offer at the Training Services NSW event.
Regional general manager Susie George congratulated Lucy.
“Participation in the State Training Awards is a great example of how TAFE NSW equips our students with the skills and practical experience that is required by the workforce,” she said.
“I congratulate Lucy, who has strived to achieve such a high level of success, and acknowledge the commitment and sacrifice which goes into such an effort.
“TAFE NSW has a reputation as a leader in vocational education and training, and winning awards at this level confirms that we have much to be proud of.”
