“It’s very exciting because I have put a lot of work into learning more business skills this year and focussing on the business side of what I do,” she said. “So, this nomination is wonderful recognition of the effort I have put in to build the business.”
Ms Horder has always had a flair for hair, but the savvy entrepreneur realised to be successful she also needed to be skilled in other aspects of business management.
“Hair is my thing,” she said. “But this year I have gone more down the path of learning about marketing and how to grow my business. I still undertake hair courses as well. I try to do a couple of industry-related courses a year and have in-house training every second month. It’s important to me, being home-based, to make sure I can still offer all the services and use the latest techniques.”
A key reason for her success so far, Ms Horder believes, is that she listens.
“My main aim is to listen to what my customer wants, and then help them the best way I can – even giving them tips on how to style their hair at home. And always be honest with them.”
Ms Horder thanked her husband Daniel for his support on this journey.
“He has fitted out the salon three times for me!” she said.
