Police said an employee turned up to the newsagency and post office for work about 5am Sunday when she spotted a pair of shoes on the floor near a computer desk.
She told police she then heard snoring coming from a bedroom at the rear of the building and approached to find someone sleeping.
The woman contacted the business owner and police. A man was reportedly still asleep in the bed when officers arrived.
Police looked around the premises and discovered damage to a fly screen outside the bedroom window.
The man, who police say was intoxicated, was woken up, arrested and later charged with malicious damage and trespassing.
The 24-year-old was granted conditional bail to appear in Maitland Local Court next month.
