Two Hunter girls are making their mark in the world of theatre, receiving rave reviews for their productions in Melbourne.

Kate Cameron, originally from Cessnock, and Cassandra (Sandy) Whittem of East Maitland, have taken the Victorian theatre scene by storm and are tipped to make big names for themselves both nationally and internationally.
Recognition has come for Kate in her behind the scenes work on the production Foreign Woman and for Sandy in her on stage acting and vocalist roles.
Kate, 25, studied a Bachelor of Performance in Wollongong and has worked in theatres in Wollongong, Sydney and Melbourne.
Her current projects are Foreign Woman (producer), Love Bird (producer and assistant director). She is also participating in the Australian Theatre for Young People Ink playwriting program.
“Both Foreign Women and Love Bird are being produced under my production company, The Kate Cameron Company, and I have a few undisclosed productions entering a pre-production phase in preparation for next year,” she said.
Sandy, 24, also performs as the vocal half of a jazz duo “Let them Eat Cake”, and performs regularly, notably at the NGV’s Friday Nights, a program featuring local and international jazz musicians every Friday in the National Gallery of Victoria’s main atrium. She also has a project in the works for next year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Foreign Woman is a musical comedy cabaret telling the true story of two extraordinary women and their anything but ordinary lives in the lead up to immigrating to Australia.
Reviewer, The Recruiting Officer, gave the production five out of five stars describing it as “the best hour of theatre you’ll see all year.” Another reviewer, The Bullock, said “Foreign Woman is the most complete comedy cabaret imaginable. “ Another five stars.
The production will run at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne from September 24 to 30 as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. There is a possibility it may go on tour.
Also receiving great reviews is Love Bird – a coming of age story about an eight-year-old girl and the prince of her dreams. It opens at the Trades Hall meeting room in Carlton from October 3 to 7.
