Former Maitland mayor and long-time councillor Ray Fairweather has put out a call to Maitland residents to donate to embattled aged care facility Benhome, which is under the control of an independent adviser after being sanctioned for failing to meet some accreditation standards.

Mr Fairweather had posted on Facebook how monetary donations had been made in the past to help the home with its day-to-day running expenses. “And I think it’s time this happened again,” he said.
“If my memory serves me right, and things are still the same at Benhome, there would be a large honour board just inside the main door of Benhome honouring those who made a contribution in setting up Benhome as a Benevolent Home for Maitland citizens,” Mr Fairweather said in his post.
“I believe monetary contributions have been made by benefactors in the past to assist with the daily function of Benhome.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we now have in this day a few friendly benefactors that would like to have their name added to that famous board, or a benefactor who would privately donate believing they have had it good during their life time.”
Mr Fairweather said donations from benefactors could go towards additional staff at the facility’s new $18million wing. “I can only assume that they spent $18 million on more accommodation but it would appear they haven’t taken into account the recurrent cost of hiring staff and paying their wages,” he said. “There are people out there who have had a pretty good life in Maitland and might like to spread some of that love and kindness they have for the city by making a donation.”
