Well, council and BirdLife Australia want your help.
From next Monday until Sunday, October 28 – which coincides with National Bird Week – the Aussie Backyard Bird Count will take place.
And Maitland Council, in association with BirdLife Australia, is encouraging local residents to spend time in their backyards or local outdoor spaces to count the birds they see as a part of this initiative.
“To take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count all you need is 20 minutes and either the Aussie Bird Count app or access to aussiebirdcount.org.au,” council’s Manager of Development and Environment David Simm said.
“‘You do not need to be a professional birdwatcher to participate as the free app will help you identify local birds based on size, colour and location.”
This year’s count follows a record smashing Aussie Backyard Bird Count in 2017, where more than 72,000 nature loving Australians counted more than 1.9 million birds.
“If you are looking for somewhere different to birdwatch, a couple of great options would be Earthcare Park at Tenambit or Walka Water Works at Oakhampton, they’re both great spots,” added Mr Simm.
One person taking part is Maitland Mercury bird columnist Margaret Clarke.
“Absolutely I’ll do some counting,” she said.
“Modern lifestyle, and in particular the alarming urban sprawl, has restricted access to green spaces for many of us.
“Research indicates that our physical and mental well-being is dependent on nature and just being around trees can boost your immune-system and relieve stress.”
She says bird watching is a great reason to visit a park or garden.
“It is a very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and anyone can participate. All you need is a pair of binoculars and a bird identification field guide and you are ready to enter the amazing world of birds.
“If you need help learning about birds or like company, you can join Hunter Bird Observers Club and take part in their regular outings.
“Birds in Backyards Spring survey is conducted by everyday people.”
