Less than two weeks out from the Newcastle Hunter Rugby League grand final the Hawks ost all their training gear, the canteen, clubhouse, medical gear and equipment in what police believe to be was a deliberately lit fire.
But the Hawks, with amazing support from the community, have overcome adversity claiming the NHRL D-grade premiership along the way.
“The support has been fantastic and we have now been able to reach our $10,000 target to replace our lost equipment with Debra Ford and Stone Real Estate chipping in $3000 honouring their pledge of $500 from every house sold in September,” club spokesman Dean Peterkin said.
“It’s amazingly generous and we have passed our target now. Debra will also stay on as a sponsor in 2019.”
The news keeps on getting better with Cody Dodd signing on as captain-coach for 2019 and huge interest in the formation of the Abermain Old Boys Club.
“Cody was apart of the Hawks grand final side and a great leader among that team,” Peterkin said.
Peterkin, who stepped down as coach because of work commitments, said more than 100 former players had already joined an Old Boys Facebook page and were ready to sign on as members.
The club is holding a “meet the coach” night on Friday, November 2, at The Hotel Denman from 6.30pm.
